Another meeting of the Council on Disability Affairs under the Cabinet of Ministers was held in Bishkek, with the participation of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Heba Hagrass.
At the meeting, current issues related to the rights of persons with disabilities were discussed, including the development of rehabilitation centers and social projects aimed at improving the living conditions and integration of people with special needs.
The Minister of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of the Kyrgyz Republic, Zhyldyz Polotova, informed the participants about the measures being taken to fulfill the commitments under the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. She also highlighted the importance of the Council as a vital tool for improving inclusivity and involving citizens with disabilities in decision-making. Polotova emphasized that disability issues hold an important place on the state agenda, and stated that the government would continue to expand access to funding for organizations supporting people with disabilities and enhance the provision of social services.
“Protecting the rights of people with disabilities is not just a social obligation; it is a reflection of the maturity of our society. We must create all conditions for their full integration into public life, providing access to education, work, and medical care. Today’s meeting is an important step towards creating an inclusive environment where every citizen, regardless of physical abilities, feels like an equal participant in social life,” said Edil Baysalov, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kyrgyz Republic.
At the end of the meeting, a tour of the “Yntymak-Ordo” building of the Presidential Administration of the Kyrgyz Republic was organized for the participants. The building has been designed to ensure accessibility for people with disabilities, with features like ramps, elevators, wide doorways, and barrier-free entrances.
During the meeting, subgrants were presented as part of the “InKoom” project, implemented with the financial support of the European Union, in collaboration with the NGOs “Nazik Kyz” and “KAJS,” aimed at expanding economic opportunities and addressing the protection of the rights of women and girls with disabilities who have experienced violence.
